月の上で
The conditions on the moon are very different from those on Earth. For instance, the surface becomes extremely hot, about 110℃, in strong sunlight, but in the dark it becomes as cold as –170℃. Also, usable water is very limited. Because of these conditions, plants cannot grow naturally on the moon.
To solve this problem, scientists are trying to make artificial environments. In a plant factory, they can keep the temperature suitable for plants. They do not use sunlight directly, but instead they use artificial lights. Research has shown that red light is useful for growing plants, and that mixing red with blue light makes the growth even better.
Another important question is what kinds of plants should be grown. Since there is little water on the moon, scientists look for plants that can live with only a small amount of water.
Interestingly, this research may also help people on Earth. In some parts of the world, there is not enough food today. Farmers may use the scientists’ knowledge to produce crops more efficiently. At first, I thought the problem on the moon and the problem on Earth were not connected. But now I know they are related. By learning from these studies, I also want to try solving problems in my daily life.
